Can You “Catch” Getting Fat?

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

fatYour mom or dad may have encouraged you as a youngster to bundle up so that you didn’t catch a cold. What they may have not warned you about (probably because they did not know) was that keeping warm and away from viruses may also help you avoid gaining weight. I know this sounds ridiculous and a little outlandish but it seems to be true. You might be able to “catch” obesity.

A University of Wisconsin study, unrelated to weight loss, found that chickens injected with the Adenoviruses gained a substantial amount of weight. These are the same viruses that cause upper respiratory infections and other common illnesses in humans. Not every strain led to weight loss but some did. While this is a rather new finding and one that must be researched further and in humans to in order to determine its’ validity, it still is very interesting and sure to be followed up on.

Scientists are also starting to believe that stem cells may also have the ability to cause individuals to gain weight. Stem cells can change and transform. They can also become fat cells when they come into contact with Adenoviruses. The virus will multiply the number of fat cells and also increase the fat within these cells, making it doubly worse.

Studies comparing twins have found that the heavier twin tended to have antibodies from the adenovirus-26 virus, while the thinner twin did not. This suggests that the virus may at least be partly responsible for causing obesity.

With all of this new and interesting information concerning weight gain and viruses, it brings the question of the ability of a vaccine to that could be administered to protect people from obesity. Why not? It certainly does not seem impossible especially if they can narrow down the “fat virus.” Today, you can get a vaccine for the Flu, the Mumps, cervical cancer and a host of other dangerous viruses. Many people visit their doctor’s offices or local clinics every year to help defend them selves from illnesses like the flu. Why not do likewise with obesity?

Being overweight and obese is becoming a serious problem in the United States. People are becoming sicker and having higher incidences of chronic illness simply because they are overweight. While the physical dangers of being overweight are often reported, what is underreported is the social and emotional damage felt by those that are overweight. Persons that are overweight may feel unable to be themselves, go out in public or enjoy life fully.

There are many types of recognized discrimination. However, discrimination against people who are significantly over weight is often not addressed and largely ignored. It seems OK to tell “fat” jokes even though this type of behavior would be totally unaccepted and even illegal against other populations.

If it is possible for scientist to pinpoint any extra factors outside of poor diet and lack of exercise that may cause persons to gain weight, millions of people would have one more tool in their arsenal to fight weight gain. While we will have to wait and see what comes from the above research, the possibilities are really exciting.

Will The Reverse Calorie Diet Work For You?

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

diet-2The Reverse Calorie Diet is a fairly new diet created by Tricia Cunningham. Cunningham essentially lost weight by eating in reverse. She would consume her biggest meals in the morning and then pare down her food choices toward the end of the day. This allowed her body to burn the majority of the calories when it was most active, in the beginning of the day. When the body’s calorie burning ability slowed down in the evenings, she would eat less food. Eating this way allowed her to shave off the pounds without starving herself.

While this diet plan sounds pretty simple and even promising, the big question is, will it work for you? Well, the short answer is maybe. Really it depends. Ask yourself the following questions. If you answer yes to the majority of them, then this diet may work just fine for you. If not, you may need to keep looking for a plan that works for you.

Do You Do Breakfast?: If you a person that enjoys a big breakfast then the Reverse Calorie Diet may be a good pick. However, if you never eat breakfast and have no desire to then skip out on this one.

Do You Get Up Early Enough In The Morning?:  In order for this diet to work you will have to either get up early and cook a big breakfast or be willing to eat leftovers. The majority of your calories will be consumed in the and early afternoon so you will need to be OK cooking it yourself or have the money to go and purchase a big breakfast or lunch.

Are You Willing To Cook or Eat Leftovers?: If you don’t want to cook, then you may need to save food from the night before and eat it in the morning. This will allow you to get by without having to make a big fuss in the kitchen. This is especially true for persons who do not like to cook and also for those who are extremely busy and don’t have enough time in the morning.

Can You Handle Late Evening Cravings?: Some people won’t be able to handle not eating a lot during the evening and at night. A salad may not be satisfying enough. If you know that you won’t be able to handle this, then forgo this diet because it won’t work. You will end up wasting your time and effort.

Here are some tips to get the most out of this diet: You might also want to consider reducing the number of carbs that you eat throughout the day and not eating after 7:00 p.m.  It is also important to limit or avoid alcohol, sugar and soda. You can eat any type of vegetables that you want, along with olive oil, eggs, lemons, fruit, chicken, seafood and oatmeal. Cooking with olive oil is great. You also need to drink plenty of water, including a few glasses of hot water with lemon.

The Reverse Calorie Diet is a pretty new diet but it has been getting a lot of buzz. It works for some people but won’t work for everyone. If you are person who likes to eat breakfast or who is willing to start, then this may work for you. However, if you would rather eat evenly throughout the day and do not want to taper your calories then this may be one diet that you might want to skip out on.

Prescription Diet Pills: Do You Need Them?

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

diet-pillsFor many people, diet and exercise are not enough. These weight loss methods just aren’t effective in helping some individuals lose the weight that they need to. This may be because of genetics or a host of other factors. Some people are simply more prone to being overweight and having a higher percentage of body fat. Also, those that may need to lose weight right away may need to take measures that are a little more involved then simply hitting the gym and skimping on the chocolate cake. One way for persons who are severely overweight to get the help that they need to lose weight is to speak with a doctor about prescription diet pills. These are typically much more effective then those that you purchase over-the-counter at your local Wal-Mart or drug store.

Persons with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 may be eligible for weight loss prescription pills. This is especially true if they are having healthy problems associated with them being overweight. If they do not have a BMI of 27 (with obesity related problems) or a BMI over 30, their doctor may not be willing to prescribe them.

Many of these types of medications work by suppressing the appetite. This means that you won’t want to eat as much as you used to. When you’re not hungry, you don’t overeat and thus you will be able to lose weight. Other prescription diet pills will prevent your body from absorbing fat and instead will flush some of the fat that you intake out of the body.

The most popular prescription diet pills are Meridia and Xenical. Both of these have gotten the OK from the FDA to treat obesity, long term (2 years).  Xenical works by preventing your body from absorbing some of the fat that you consume, roughly 30% of it. Today, Xenical can be purchased over-the-counter as Alli.

There was a lot of excitement when it became publicized that you could purchase Alli (Xenical) without a prescription from your doctor. However, the excitement was quickly tempered when users became aware of the unpleasant and potentially embarrassing side effects of eating too much fat when taking these pills. Many people were complaining about soiling their clothes when they ate too much fat.

Meridia is another prescription diet pill option. It works as an appetite suppressant. Meridia is designed to help quell your urges to eat. Because you are not hungry and consume less calories, you should lose weight.

Prescription diet pills can be extremely helpful under the right circumstances. If you are at a point in your life where you are ready both mentally and physically to lose weight, then you have a great chance to do just that with the help of diet pills. On the other hand, if you are depending on them to do all the heavy lifting (meaning that you expect to take them and continue with an unhealthy lifestyle) for you, then you are apt to be disappointed. These pills will only help you lose weight if you are willing to change your eating habits for the better and start exercising. If you refuse, you either won’t have much success or you will quickly regain any weight that you have lost.
