Tips to Help Teenagers Lose Weight

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

teens-weight-lossAdults are not the only segment of the population that needs to lose weight. A growing number of children, adolescents and teenagers are also faced with the prospect of growing older while being overweight.

The negative consequences of being at an unhealthy weight are many, and well-publicized.  This can lead to chronic disease, heart problems, skeletal issues and a loss of self-esteem. Below, we are going to discuss five tips to help teenagers lose weight.

Many teens, like adults when needing to lose weight, choose to go on restrictive diet.  This is a big no-no for several reasons. Obviously, such diets are hard to maintain because it’s very difficult to not eat enough calories or to not consume the types of foods that you like. However, for teenagers it even more dangerous because during this phase of their development they need calories in order to properly grow. Therefore, a teenager should not necessarily go on the same diet as an adult if they are still growing. Instead, this takes us to our second tip. They should increase the amount of physical activity that they engage in.

Exercise helps keep the body strong, tone the muscles and also gives teens a little leeway when it’s comes to eating.  They will be able to occasionally have their favorite snacks or meals without hampering their weight loss efforts. This makes it more likely that they will stick their diet. Therefore, exercise is very key. It also builds endurance and confidence.

If a teenager is severely overweight, they should visit their doctor. Their physician will be able to provide them with tools and suggestions that can help them lose weight. They may even prescribe some type of diet pill. Prescription diet pills are generally much more effective than those that can be purchased over the counter.  Also, since it will be given under the supervision of a doctor, there are less chances of complications and problems.

Teenagers should also look to find a support group. This could take the form of weight loss camps or online communities that cater to overweight teens.  There may also be relevant, local meetings or groups in one’s area.  These types of gatherings let teens know that they are not alone. Also, the support from others can encourage them to work out, eat healthy and lose weight.

Lastly, teenagers should set goals and then come up with rewards once they reach certain milestones. For example, once they lose 10 pounds perhaps Mom and Dad can take them shopping or they might receive some type of special privilege at home. The goal here is to keep them focused and looking ahead.

Getting The Family Involved: Losing Weight Together

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

familyMany times being overweight runs in families.  This may be due to genetics but also may be the results of the way that a particular family eats or the level of physical activity that they engage in. One of the best ways to get the family back in shape and lose weight is to work together.

You may or may not have seen “The Biggest Loser-Family Edition” ( a popular, televised weight loss program). This show features families that need to lose weight. To accomplish this, they work out together and support each other in an effort to beat a competing family. Everyone is doing their part to whittle down to target weight. It’s difficult and grueling but even the family that loses (doesn’t lose as much weight as the family they are competing against) still takes a lot from the experience. They often continue their change of lifestyle once they return home and lose even more weight. Besides become healthier, families that have been on the show nearly always comment about how their experience brought them closer together.  Today, everyone can have their own edition of “The Biggest Loser” at home. Working together as a family to lose weight can make it much easier for everyone to get down to a healthy size.

Typically, things are much easier to accomplish when you have the support of others around you. There are many ways for the entire family to lose those extra pounds. Some of the best ones include, group exercise, setting group and individual goals, deciding on group and family rewards (for meeting individual and family weight loss goals) and weekly meetings.

Exercising together as a family is not only enjoyable but it also can go a long way toward solidifying relationships within the family. As children get older, stressors and busy schedules develop, it can be difficult to stay plugged in with each other at times.  Setting up firm times to get together and exercise can benefit the family both physically and emotionally.

Before any diet plan is started, every member of the family should sit down and set individual goals. After that is done, then as a family, the group should set goals. For example, collecting losing 300 pounds in 6 months may be something that is doable and can get the family excited and focused on losing weight.

Come up with group rewards as well.  Once the family goals are met, perhaps plan a nice vacation or a fun trip.  Whatever types of things that your particular family likes to do and that is not done all the time, would be a good choice.

Lastly, have weekly meetings. Get together and talk about your progress, your struggles and your setbacks. You might even all weigh in during this time. This type of support is given quite often in programs like Weight Watchers. They are set up this way because they work.  If it can work with people who do not know each other, it should work even better with those who not only know each other but love each other as well

If your family needs to lose weight, there is no time like the present to get started.  Consider exercising together as a group, setting individual and group goals along with group rewards and having weekly meetings to help each member stay on track and focused.

Weight Loss Over 40

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

older-coupleFor many people, once they’ve reached the age of 40, weight loss becomes much more difficult. For some individuals this may even start as early as their thirties.

Because this is the time in one’s life where there are a lot of physical changes taking place, it is very important for persons who are overweight to get a handle on it and even lose weight if necessary.   It is important to note that it won’t be as easy to lose weight after you turn 40 as it was when you were 25 so don’t get discouraged. This is for several reasons.

The metabolism slows down, people typically have less muscle and engage in fewer physical activities as they age.  They also often consume the same amount of calories as they did when they were younger. While this was once not a problem, suddenly it becomes one when a person begins to gain weight, have a hard time losing it and/or starts to develop chronic diseases.

There are so special considerations that must be made people when people are looking to lose weight after 40. Because physical activity and exercise is often sacrificed due to having a busy life, running a family or simply not enjoying exercise, it is important that persons over 40 get physical. They will need to have a consistent and well thought out exercise plan in place and then they must follow it.

Because the body begins to lose muscle after a certain age, it’s important for individuals to rebuild it through weight training. The less muscle that a person’s has, the less effective their metabolism will work and subsequently, the fewer calories they will burn.  This means that they will gain weight if they don’t exercise and watch what they eat.  Weight training can also protect women against osteoporosis. Therefore, strength training is not just for men but it is also a good idea for women to build their muscles through lifting weights.

Persons also need to watch what they eat.  This means decreasing the amount of bad fats, sugary foods and snacks that are consumed. It is not longer possible to get by eating like this though they could when they were younger. Instead, these types of foods should be replaced with lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and good fats. A person should be shooting for a balanced plate every time you eat.

It is also vital that persons over 40 start working on their abs.  Individuals with big stomachs have higher incidences of chronic diseases including heart problems. Therefore, it’s important to whittle down your middle as much as possible.

Losing weight after 40 will definitely be more challenging then if you are attempting to do so in your twenties. However, it still is possible. It will require that you work hard and that you make a concerted and consistent effort. You will also need to watch what you eat, increase exercise and add strength training to your regiment.  It is very important that you speak with your doctor prior to beginning any diet or exercise program so that they can ensure that you are healthy enough to begin one.
