Why “Buddying Up” Makes Dieting Easier

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

woomenMost things are more fun when they are not done alone. This includes dieting and working out. It can be quite difficult to get motivated to eat healthy and follow a workout plan by our selves. We have often developed eating and exercising habits that can difficult to break on our own. It is much easier to begin a diet and stay on track when you have someone to help encourage you and keep you accountable.

The support of another person can also help keep you going when you are tempted to give up. Not going at it alone also allows you to learn from others and pool your will power. It is much more fun (if you can ever call dieting fun) to lose weight when you are doing it with someone else. Seeing results and losing weight can also be quite exciting and even more so when you can celebrate it with someone else who is going through it with you.

Having a partner can also help keep you accountable. Many people give up on their diet and exercise plans when the cravings for unhealthy food and snacks get overwhelming and when you get bored (or sore) with exercising. Being able to call someone up or have them question you about what you are putting in your mouth each day, can cause you to re-think picking up that donut or skipping that workout.

Having someone in the “weight loss trenches” with you also provides you a source of moral support that you can’t generate on your own. Being able to reciprocate this encouragement and support will also help you feel good and much more responsible to sticking with the plan yourself.

“Buddying up” gives you an opportunity to learn from each other. One person may be really disciplined when it comes to exercise while another person may be able to create delicious and low fat meals. Each person can share what they know and thus strengthen the other. You’ve likely heard the old adage “two heads are better then one.” This is true. Everyone has different strengths, skills and abilities. Being able to utilize and learn from each other can make dieting and exercising much more effective.

Being able to pool will power is another benefit of working together with others. When one person gets down, the other person can encourage them. When one party wants to quit, someone else can step in and try to convince them to keep going. Those cookies, cakes and salty foods will eventually become tempting. Knowing that other people are pulling for you can help you say no and stay on your diet.

“Buddying up” or starting a diet and exercise plan with others can be quite beneficial. It can help keep you on track, accountable and provides a measure of support that you can’t achieve on your own. You can also learn from other people and pool each other’s will power. All of these things give you a greater chance of sticking to your diet and exercise plan which will enable you to lose the weight that you desire.

Navigate Your Way Thin at the Supermarket

imagesWhen you shop at the grocery store – it matters where you choose to find the food! The choices that you make while eating come first at the grocery store. The choices that you make while shopping can contribute to weight loss, weight gain or even the state of your health. Use these tips while shopping at the grocery store to change the way that you eat to promote a weight loss in your life.

Stick to Perimeter of the Grocery Store
Sticking to the perimeter of the grocery store can lead to the dieter losing weight. Why does this occur? On the perimeter of the grocery store, is the place that you should stick to and the food group that you should be eating in. the foods that you will find on the perimeter of the grocery store will include fruits and vegetables, lean meat choices and grains. These are the only foods that you should be buying. In the aisles of the grocery store, the shelves are laden with processed and refined foods that are higher in sugar and fats. Avoid these types of food and make it yourself to ensure that you can promote a healthy weight and maintain this healthy weight.

Look for Whole Grains
When you search the bread portion of the grocery store, it is important to look for whole grains. Whole grains include oats and bran that can contribute to the health and digestive tract as they contain high levels of fiber. Fiber is a way to increase the amount of calories that the body can burn as well as promoting the optimal digestive health. Whole grains contain less fat than other types of breads and are often less refined than white bread. It is important to determine the ingredients that are included to make the grain products (sometimes, whole grains don’t really mean whole grains)!

Look for Lower Fat and Lower Sugar Products
These types of products may be found within the aisles and can lead to a weight loss without following an actual dieting program! Weight loss can be easy when it comes time to nix the sugar and extra fat that come within the diet. These products contain snacks with less than 100 calories and other types of food that are lower in fat and are even sugar free! Sugar alternatives can be a great way to sweeten the deal without adding in the extra calories to the diet program.

Fill Your Cart with Fruit and Vegetables
Fruit and vegetables are something that not every dieter gets enough of. Did you know that more than fifty percent of people do not get the five to ten servings which are recommended in the daily program of most diets? Adding in fruit and vegetables to the cart can be a great way to incorporate natural sugars rather than refined foods. The majority of the cart should be filled with these foods containing high levels of nutrients and vitamins.

Can You “Catch” Getting Fat?

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

fatYour mom or dad may have encouraged you as a youngster to bundle up so that you didn’t catch a cold. What they may have not warned you about (probably because they did not know) was that keeping warm and away from viruses may also help you avoid gaining weight. I know this sounds ridiculous and a little outlandish but it seems to be true. You might be able to “catch” obesity.

A University of Wisconsin study, unrelated to weight loss, found that chickens injected with the Adenoviruses gained a substantial amount of weight. These are the same viruses that cause upper respiratory infections and other common illnesses in humans. Not every strain led to weight loss but some did. While this is a rather new finding and one that must be researched further and in humans to in order to determine its’ validity, it still is very interesting and sure to be followed up on.

Scientists are also starting to believe that stem cells may also have the ability to cause individuals to gain weight. Stem cells can change and transform. They can also become fat cells when they come into contact with Adenoviruses. The virus will multiply the number of fat cells and also increase the fat within these cells, making it doubly worse.

Studies comparing twins have found that the heavier twin tended to have antibodies from the adenovirus-26 virus, while the thinner twin did not. This suggests that the virus may at least be partly responsible for causing obesity.

With all of this new and interesting information concerning weight gain and viruses, it brings the question of the ability of a vaccine to that could be administered to protect people from obesity. Why not? It certainly does not seem impossible especially if they can narrow down the “fat virus.” Today, you can get a vaccine for the Flu, the Mumps, cervical cancer and a host of other dangerous viruses. Many people visit their doctor’s offices or local clinics every year to help defend them selves from illnesses like the flu. Why not do likewise with obesity?

Being overweight and obese is becoming a serious problem in the United States. People are becoming sicker and having higher incidences of chronic illness simply because they are overweight. While the physical dangers of being overweight are often reported, what is underreported is the social and emotional damage felt by those that are overweight. Persons that are overweight may feel unable to be themselves, go out in public or enjoy life fully.

There are many types of recognized discrimination. However, discrimination against people who are significantly over weight is often not addressed and largely ignored. It seems OK to tell “fat” jokes even though this type of behavior would be totally unaccepted and even illegal against other populations.

If it is possible for scientist to pinpoint any extra factors outside of poor diet and lack of exercise that may cause persons to gain weight, millions of people would have one more tool in their arsenal to fight weight gain. While we will have to wait and see what comes from the above research, the possibilities are really exciting.
