Back in 1952, when the first ‘diet soda’ came on the market, it was called No-Cal, a sugar-free ginger ale. The product, first released in Brooklyn, New York, was meant for diabetics, not dieters, and it never left the local market.

However, in a few more years, with the growing popularity of soft drinks both Pepsi and Coca-Cola picked up on the burgeoning diet craze and came out with several versions of “no calorie” sodas.

The first artificial sweeteners in use were cyclamates, which were later banned by the FDA on evidence that they caused cancer in lab rats. Saccharin then became the sweetener of choice, and it too was temporarily banned because of suspected cancer-causing properties.

While the ban was later lifted, most manufacturers had switched to aspartame and/or other sugar substitutes.

To date, there have been several long-term studies indicating that all these no-calorie diet sodas may actually have the opposite effect from the one intended.

The Framingham Heart Study in Massachusetts noted that 48% of the 9,000 male and female subjects in their study who drank diets sodas were at higher risk for weight gain and elevated blood sugar. Their findings also indicated that the use of artificial sweeteners actually seemed to increase cravings for other sugar-laden sweets.

A report made at the American Diabetic Association’s annual session by Sharon Fowler from the University of Texas Health Science Center showed some other surprising results.

A correlation between consumption of sodas and weight gain was established (not surprising), but the risk of weight gain among those who drank diet sodas averaged out greater than that of the ones who drank regular cola’s.

The reasons for this are not clear, but there are a couple of theories that researchers are trying to substantiate. One is that the body may be ‘thrown off’ by the artificial sweetener, reacting as if it were getting the real thing but when the expected calories are not delivered, appetite for sweets increases.

Another theory has to do with life style and mindset. Dieters hoping to lose weight may convince themselves that since their cola has no calories it’s OK to have a few extra sweets, as it all balances out.

No definitive conclusions have been reported at this time, but it is beginning to look as if dieters who stick faithfully to sugar-free colas may be misplacing their faith. Since about half the calories in a ‘regular’ soda are more than many of the currently popular diets allow, the options seem to be limited.

The most effective, if not the most attractive to many people, is simply to stop drinking sodas, period. This may mean a real change in life style, which is advocated by most of the legitimate dieticians and health care providers anyway. It is probably time to re-think the way you eat and drink.

It is also a good idea to evaluate your overall level of physical activity. If you get enough exercise to burn off the calories you consume, you’re in a position to enjoy better health both physically and mentally.

There comes a time when some dieters must resort to surgery in order to meet the needs of their weight loss. At this point in time we have reached the technology to be able to offer two types of surgeries to these patients; lap band surgery and gastric bypass surgery. Although both surgeries involve some sort of surgical procedure, there are side effect and risks to each surgery.

Lap band surgery is considered to be the least invasive form of the two surgeries. This type of surgery is an effective way to reduce the size of the stomach pouch by using a band which is placed around the upper portion of the stomach. The band is adjusted by using a solution which is injected into the band from a pouch that is located just under the skin in the abdomen. Adjusting the lap band is simple and can take as little as a few minutes during a visit to the bariatric surgeon that completed the procedure. There is little pain which is associated with adjusting the lap band and most often an adjustment occurs at least once per month until the “sweet spot” is found which can enable the patient to lose the most amount of weight through the entire procedure.

Gastric bypass surgery involves actually removing the portion of the stomach and stapling the tissue to make a smaller food pouch. This will enable the dieter to lose an optimal amount of weight through the entire process and bypasses a portion of the large intestine. This invasive method comes with a higher risk factor for the patient, before and after the surgery. There are also increased risks of potential side effects that can occur through gastric bypass surgery but yet this remains the procedure of choice when it comes to weight loss surgeries in the United States.

Gastric bypass surgery comes with some side effects that are concerning, as the lap band procedure can assist in reducing the chances of these side effects occurring. Dumping syndrome refers to a condition in which food that has yet to have been fully digested entering into the intestine. There are many effects of this, including sweats and cold chills and other symptoms which can be compared to being in shock. There is an immediate feeling of needing to go to the bathroom and cramps, as well as abdominal bloating that can occur when one experiences dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome is rarely associated with patients that have underdone the lap band procedure.

The lap band procedure creates a weight loss tool which can be easily removed if the patient does not fare well during the treatment. The lap band surgery also allows the patient to remove the band or deflate the band in the case that further nutrition is required in the case of malnutrition or if the patient chooses to become pregnant, or is diagnosed with a condition that requires as much nutrition as possible.

The safer and just as effective treatment is the lap band surgery, although there can be an increased cost. It is important to determine all aspects of each procedure before making the decision of which weight loss surgery to undergo.

Colon cleansers are used for a variety of reasons from reducing the toxins in the body to increasing weight loss in an individual that is beginning a diet or has reached a plateau in their diet. Colon cleansers are an effective way to lose up to ten pounds and can last anywhere from forty-eight hours to seven days.

How does a colon cleanser program work? Colon cleansers assist in the weight loss process by creating an environment in which toxins can be removed from the body. Supplements are used to clean the colon and this is combined with a diet that includes fasting with the use of water or juice.

Depending on the ingredients that are found in the colon cleansing system, it should be completed no more than once per month. This can allow the body time to recuperate and build the vitamins and nutrients which are required by the body to allow the dieter to avoid malnutrition that can come with colon cleansing, as there is no food being consumed through the entire program. To offset this fact, it is important to supplement the colon cleanser with an effective multivitamin that can reduce the chances of the body rejecting the weight loss.

Since colon cleansers are fasts, it is recommended by dieticians and health care professionals that once per month is the maximum time that colon cleansers should be used. This does not mean that you should binge after the fasting and the colon cleansing have been finished, this simply means that you should slowly increase the food intake and supplement with health vegetables and fruits to build up the vitamins within the body that have been depleted as only water has been ingested while the body undergoes the process of detoxification.

There are many health care professionals and nutritionists that recommend cleansing the colon at least four times per year, with the change of the seasons. This will ensure that the toxins, chemicals and other additives and preservatives can be removed from the body through each of these seasons. Depending on the needs of your body and the digestive health, it can be easy to determine when your colon requires a cleansing. If you find yourself straining to go the bathroom for an extended period of time, this can be an indicator that a colon cleanse should be completed.

The general rule of thumb is to pay attention to your body. If you find yourself easily and able to go to the bathroom and can easily digest certain foods, it may not be necessary to complete a colon cleanse. However, colon cleansing for weight loss and detoxification should not be completed more than once per month to maintain the balance within the colon. After all, like every part of the body there are good bacteria which are present in the body that can aid in the processes of the body, including digestion.

In the case that colon cleansing is completed too often, it can reduce the effects of these good bacteria and leave you unhealthy. Read the indications on the packaging to ensure that you are not colon cleansing too often.

Since the discovery of the Acai berry deep in the Brazilian rainforest, there have been a myriad of products developed for weight loss and antioxidant health created from the popular fruit. Although the fruit is merely ten percent pulp, which is used to create the powerful extract – the rest being pit or seed, the properties of the berry are seemingly endless when it comes to the powers to cleanse the colon and become an extract in many weight loss supplements.

One of the most popular products that has been created using the powerful antioxidant properties of the Acai berry are the colon cleansing properties. The Acai berry colon cleanse diet is one of the most popular and includes supplements and juices created from the Acai berry in combination with fasting and water consumption, as well as exercise. This winning method for weight loss is an effective way to tone down before the summer, shedding those extra pounds in a matter of a week.

There have been many dieters that have seen success using the Acai berry colon cleanses for weight loss. Some of these dieters have lost upwards of fifteen pounds through the duration of the colon cleansing program. Are you ready to start a weight loss program that can give you results within the matter of days? Perhaps the Acai berry colon cleanse system is right for you.

Has the Acai berry colon cleansing system been proven as safe? As with many weight loss programs, there are many that doubt the ability of the weight loss program, as it includes a colon cleanse. In reality, the colon cleanse can actually cause more weight loss in the future as the berries are an effective way of reducing the toxins in the body. When the toxins are removed from the body, the dieter can often see optimal results when it comes to losing weight.

As long as the ingredients that are included in the Acai berry colon cleanse are all natural, than the product is 100% safe and will often have many benefits on the health. When there are foreign chemicals introduced to the body, weight loss supplements can often be found ineffective as the body is unable to process these foreign chemicals, and they can add to the toxins in the body – rather than reducing these toxins and encouraging weight loss within the dieter.

The Acai berry colon cleansing system is an effective way to start your colon cleansing program. For beginners, there are many introductory offers that are available on the internet to allow the use of a free trial to see just how effective the Acai berry colon cleansing program really is. If you rather find the product in person, consider making a stop to a local health food store to determine which Acai berry colon cleanser is most effective for the purpose that you require.

Acai berry is a powerful antioxidant and should be used to the full extent – especially since it is so effective in the colon cleansing process.

Do the promises of body wraps offered at spas that help the client to lose up to twelve inches per session come with any merit? Is it truly possible to bind the body in a way, using specific products to allow for weight lost through inches in the body? Many consumers wonder the validity of these claims for these products to “wrap themselves thin” – so here is the fact and fiction of these claims.

What is a body wrap? Throughout the process of the body wrap, the skin is wrapped with specific elements and ingredients and then constricted which can result in tighter appearing skin that reduces the amount of cellulite that can be seen. Many say that it has the ability to remove the toxins from the body and reduce the amount of fat, flushing it from the system, which causes the loss in inches.

Body wraps are available at salons as treatments and at various other boutique weight loss programs to compliment the work that is being done. Is there any merit to these claims that body wraps can help to enhance the weight loss process and help the dieter to lose those valuable inches from the body?

Unfortunately, the permanent weight loss process cannot occur from a body wrap that measures the inches that are lost from the body through the course of the treatment. To lose weight you must work from the inside out, not from the outside in. The body wrap allows the dieter to feel the tighter skin, but this affect is often temporary and will reverse within one to two days of the wrap being completed. Unfortunately, avoiding the weight return that came from the body wrap is impossible. As soon as you begin to eat and drink regularly, the inches will return – However, you will still have experienced the positive detoxifying effect of the body wrap.

Body wraps are often expensive at salons and the course of treatment can cost as much as two hundred dollars per session. Extravagant and exotic ingredients are used to achieve the results of the tighter skin and create a detoxifying effect. Although this cost comes with a temporary feeling of “weight loss” it often returns in the hours immediately after the session has been completed. Therefore, finding alternative methods that you can use at home to detoxify the skin and remove these inches from the body is recommended to anyone on a budget.

So, we have debunked the myths of the role that body wraps play in the weight loss process. Unfortunately, the only real way to lose weight is to combine diet and exercise to ensure that you are losing weight from the inside out and not the other way around. These treatments may assist in the process by decreasing the toxins within the body, but that’s about all a body wrap will do in your quest to lose weight.

It certainly is not something that can or should be taken lightly. The risks are too high and the lifestyle changes required after the surgery is performed are too drastic to make this decision without much thought and deep consideration. This may be a decision that takes years before a person is confident and resolute about what they want to do. This is wise because although the procedure can be reversed, it can only be done so at a high cost and with great inconvenience. There are times when the surgery may be necessary. This is often the case when a person is morbidly or severely obese, their health is in danger, nothing else has worked, they are ready to make the major changes and sacrifices that this type of procedure requires and they are emotionally healthy and stable.

When a person is morbidly obese they often have major health problems. These can lead to great discomfort and pain. They can also cause great fear for the individual and those who love and care for them. Mobility may also be an issue. Some people have incredible difficulty getting around, if they are able to at all on their own. In these cases, it may be necessary to take a drastic measure such as Gastric Bypass surgery just so they can reclaim their lives and once again become a part of society.

If a persons’ health is in danger due to their weight, then Gastric Bypass surgery may be the best option. Chronic illnesses such as heart and kidney disease are common in people that are extremely overweight. The extra weight can put a lot of strain on the organs, especially the heart. If a person begins to have serious issues and losing the weight becomes a life or death issue, the best choice may be to have the surgery.

Some people have seemingly tried every diet and exercise program out there and to no avail. They may have been able to lose hundreds of pounds but can’t lose enough to get them to a healthy weight. As long as they are willing to exercise, cut back on what they eat and have shown initiative (both will be required after the surgery to keep the weight off), then a bypass may be a good option.

A person who is considering this surgery must know that it is not going to be easy. While it will make it much less difficult to lose weight, it will require sacrifice and lifestyle changes. The types and amount of food that a person eats will have to change and an individual has to be ok with that.

Being emotionally stable and healthy is also paramount. Many times we eat and gain weight because we have some issues that we haven’t been able to work through or haven’t even been able to figure out what they are. Until these issues are dealt with, we will always eat more then we should because food becomes our comfort. Now, this is not to say that everyone who is overweight or obese has some sort of mental or emotional problem. That wouldn’t be accurate. However, in some instances this is the case. If it is and a person is thinking about having Gastric Bypass surgery, it is important that they work through these issues prior to having the surgery performed.

A professor at the Sleep Medicine Programme at the New York University School of Medicine declares that sleep plays a significant role in determining our weight levels, and that an imbalance in our sleeping habits could possibly affect our weight indirectly.

While we sleep specifics hormones are released, which are linked to our levels of appetite.

During sleep numerous hormones, which have different purposes are released, but this is the first time researches have found a particular hormone type that is directly linked with appetite.

Ghrelin and leptin are two hormones that influence our sleep or appetite, they also monitor and control how we feel, if we feel tired or hungry for example.

Specifically leptin has the role of transmitting signals to the brain to warn it when we have eaten enough, while the ghrelin produced stirs up appetite.

When you are not getting enough sleep the values of ghrelin increase and you feel the need to eat, whereas the values of leptin lessen and you are left feeling hungry even though you have already eaten, hence this can lead to food excess.

In a study conducted on a group of healthy adults it was determined that when they were left without sleep for two successive days and then allowed to sleep for two days, their rates of ghrelin increased, while those of leptin went down.

In a consequent more detailed study 1,000 people were examined and their sleeping habits were monitored to note both the rates of leptin and ghrelin and their weight values.

The ensuing results demonstrated that the rates of ghrelin had increased, while those of leptin had decreased, amongst the people who had been sleeping fewer than eight hours.

There also existed a definite relationship between their sleeping habits and their body mass; those who slept the least were overweight compared to those who slept regular hours.

These studies led experts to speculate on how we might just be able to solve weight problems with more sleep, although this connection is not as evident as it may appear. This is due to ‘obstructive sleep apnea’, which impedes our quality of sleeping.

Obstructive sleep apnea is the continual interruption of breathing during our hours of sleep; we may actually stop breathing for very short periods throughout the whole night, leaving us depleted when we wake up.

Hence, we may in reality think we have had a good night’s sleep, when in fact we have only really slept enough in order to replenish our bodies for only half of that time.

Although people who are affected by obstructive sleep apnea stand more chances of being overweight, strangely enough their rates of leptin, which are normally connected with overweight, are unusually low.

Atypically, these patients suffering from sleep apnea tend to lose wait once their problem has been treated and the leptin level has decreased.

Therefore a lot of questions in this theory remain to be examined in more detail.

A weight loss support group can act as an anchor when it comes to the weight loss process. it enables the dieter to come to terms with the aspects that are affecting weight loss and speak about these terms in a group that can identify with the situation.

There are many benefits to taking part in a weight loss or diet support group, including:

• You can learn skills and techniques designed to quick start weight loss and share skills that you have learned with your peers
• You can be part of a group that can identify with the feelings and emotions that must be overcome when following through a successful diet plan
• You can choose a group that you feel comfortable with – whether they be friends and family members trying to lose weight or simply strangers

Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a weight loss support group:

What Type of Group is it?
There are many types of support groups that focus on different areas of diet and weight loss. Some groups come together to discuss meal plans and others, such as Overeater’s Anonymous serve as a program to enable the dieter to stop the habit of overeating, which can essentially lead to weight loss. Determining your short and long term goals can help bring you the weight loss that you have been seeking.

How often are the Meetings?
Are you seeking a support group that can help you through the cravings on a daily basis, that can keep you in contact with members of the group to form alliances against weight loss? Some groups meet on a weekly or monthly basis, determinant on the needs of the members.

Is there Adequate Support Provided?
Do group members and leaders facilitate support even during times when there are no meetings? Are you able to have resources if you have questions off-hours? Choosing a support group that enables contact between leaders and members will often have the best effects when it comes to the weight loss process.

Do you Feel Comfortable in the Group?
Your level of comfort in the group is one of the most important aspects of choosing a weight loss support group. If you are feeling uncomfortable in the crowd, perhaps because the crowd is too large or you are unable to identify with the members than you will not receive the full benefits of the program. Be sure to attend the group one to two times to give your comfort level a chance to increase before judging the group as appropriate for your situation.

Using these tips and techniques, you should be able to find a weight loss group that can help you become part of the team and facilitate the weight loss goals that you have set for yourself. Throughout the support group experience you will learn more about yourself, members of the group and the weight loss process itself.
