The feelings that a woman experiences after she has had a baby are generally mixed. Although she is likely quite happy to have brought a new life into the world (unless she suffers from postpartum depression), she may be wondering what happened to her old body.
In most cases, after a woman has been pregnant and had a baby, her body is never quite the same. There may not be much they can be done for stretch marks or loose skin, women can lose the weight that they have gained while pregnant.
Even though most females will want to lose weight as soon as possible, it is important that women give themselves an ample amount of time and plenty of patience when it comes to taking off the baby weight. Right after a woman has given birth, most of the attention will need to go towards the baby and there is little left over for mom. Therefore, the first thing that a postpartum woman needs to do when she wants to lose weight is to simply be patient with herself.
Women may want to consider breast-feeding in order to lose weight. There is some controversy over whether or not it is possible to actually lose weight breast-feeding. Some camps say absolutely, others say no. However there is some literature out there that purports that one can burn an extra 500 to 1000 calories per day simply by breast-feeding. So you may want to at least consider it.
Following a healthy diet that cuts back on fatty foods and sweets is a good place to start. Instead of totally eliminating these things from one’s diet, women should simply start cutting back on them and replace them with fresh fruits and vegetables. This will not only help weight wise but will also give them more energy to take care of themselves and the baby. Whole grains, lean proteins and lots of vegetables are a good basic diet for anyone, including postpartum women.
Next, it is vital that some type of exercise regimen is started. This might include walking with the baby in the stroller or jogging while someone is at home of watching the baby. Exercise will help burn calories and tone up the body and also relieves the stress that many new mothers experience.
Another simple way to cut calories is to decrease the amount of soft-drink and juice that is consumed. Instead it should be replaced them with water. Drinking juice and soda are easy ways to consume empty calories and cause weight gain.
It is also a good idea to cut back on the little things. If you eat a lot of salads, choose low-fat dressing or decrease the amount that you put on your salad. Have one scoop of ice cream instead of two or three, eat one small candy bar instead of a handful. These little changes are much easier to follow through with and will also allow you to slowly begin changing your eating habits. Because so much will be going on and so there will be stressors related to the baby and a lack of sleep, it is important not to go on a real tough diet, instead ease into a healthier lifestyle.
