The Breakfast Cure Diet: Will It Work For You?

breakfastWeight loss experts have known for some time that low-carbohydrate diets are very effective in helping people lose weight. The problem is that over time, individuals begin to regain the weight.  This is largely because it is very difficult to completely cut out a certain food group completely and even to significantly reduce the consumption of a particular food group for long periods of time. In order to provide a more successful long-term solution to losing weight, the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) came up with a diet plan that utilizes some of the low-carbohydrate diet theory but has a bit of a twist. Through study, they have found that it enables people to lose much more weight than they would if they went on the Atkins diet. This plan is called the Breakfast Cure diet.

You have probably heard of a very similar diet plan pretty recently. It involves eating your largest meal at breakfast. This is done for a number of reasons. Generally, the body is better able to metabolize and burn the food that we eat in the morning or earlier in the day. This gives the body more time to actually burn these calories. The opposite is true when we eat later in the day.  For example, when people eat heavier meals right before going to sleep, they are more likely to gain weight because their body doesn’t burn calories as efficiently as during the day and they are not active so they will not be able to  burn additional calories.

In order to follow this type of diet, you have to be willing to either get up the morning and cook a very big breakfast, or eat leftovers from the night before. However, you will have to make sure that those leftovers fit into the plan.   If you do the latter, then this diet plan can really be quite easy and almost will require no additional work.  Now, it’s important to note that you just can’t eat whatever you want in the morning and think that you will be able to lose weight.

Your breakfast will need to have some protein in it.  When you consume protein in the morning, it helps keep the blood sugar level and also prevents you from being overly hungry during the day.  The same is true for fat.

The plan also requires you to eat sweets in the morning (darn!).  This might be Hershey kisses or some other type of small sweet treat.  Sweets are included to help you curb’s cravings.  It has been found that when we eat sweets in the morning, it increases the amount of serotonin that your brain makes which puts you in a better mood. This makes it less likely that you will binge (because you are sad) or crave a bunch of sweets during the day which can be a pitfall for many dieters.

Followers of this diet will need to also include carbohydrates in their big breakfast. When you eat carbohydrates in the morning they are more likely to be used as energy as opposed to being stored as fat. The converse is true in the evening.

As you can see, what you will be allowed to eat in the morning is very strategic and well thought out.  If the “Breakfast Cure” diet plan sounds like something that you would be interested, it is a good idea to do a little bit more research yourself so that you can become acquainted with the details and actual food plans.
