The Dangers of Fasting

weight-loss-2There are many dangers to dieting through the use of fasting; although there are various types of fasting, the most common includes a complete restriction of food and adhering to a liquid diet that includes water, supplements and teas or other types of laxatives which promote rapid weight loss.

Fasting can create dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar – which can actually lead to higher levels of weight loss, compared to the loss which is expected from the fasting process.

Unfortunately, many people fast for more than ten days and upwards of one month. It is important to provide the body with nutrients as these nutrients and components which are found in food are essential the processes in the body – even during weight loss! If the dieter is taking part in a fast that lasts for more than two weeks it is important to consult with a health care professional to avoid and repercussions that may come from the fasting process.

Why do people fast? There are many reasons why people fast. It has been said that fasting allows for a detoxification process to occur within the body which can cleanse the fat and toxins from inside the body purging excess fat from the body and leading to weight loss of up to ten pounds per week.

Fasting affects all organs of the body and can lead to deterioration of these organs. The thinner the person is when beginning the fast, the more danger that this person is placed in when the fasting process takes its full effect on the body. Fasting is comparable to the effects of starvation and unfortunately the body is unable to tell the difference between fasting and starvation and therefore ritual fasting can lead to drastic negative effects on the body that come when one has been exposed to starvation.

What are the negative effects that can occur within the body when you expose your body to fasting? A lack of iron being consumed can lead to symptoms of anemia and signs of fatigue because of the lack of nutrients which are being absorbed into the body. Nausea and dizziness are signs that can occur, as well as being exposed to confusion when the body is going through the first signs of starvation when fasting.

When the body goes into fasting mode, it begins to find nutrients any way that it can. Unfortunately, there is one place that the body turns to first when it comes to finding these essential nutrients – the muscle. Muscle is a crucial part of the body and is an important factor in weight loss and metabolism. Muscle mass can be deteriorated quickly and lead to weight gain. Muscle is one of the most important factors in the ability to lose weight.

Fasting is dangerous and should not be used as a weight loss method. Proper diet, exercise and low calorie snacks can lead to weight loss in a healthy way, rather than fasting for weight loss.
