288113_f260After succumbing to the quick fix promises of the master cleanse diet – I had decided to give it a try as my pants were a little tighter than they used to be. I planned to complete the diet for one week, just enough time to lose five to ten pounds (temporarily, I know) of weight that was making it difficult to move in my favorite skinny jeans!

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the master cleanse diet, it is also referred to as the lemonade diet and the maple syrup diet. These names all have to do with the components of the diet which include water, organic maple syrup, cayenne pepper and lemon juice which are combined to make the drink which I was going to live on for the next week.

The ingredients were easy enough to track down. It was a little more difficult to find the organic and natural maple syrup that the diet plan recommended, but while at the health food store I picked up a multi vitamin to keep healthy while taking part in the diet plan.

Through the first morning of the diet I was fine. Of course, when lunchtime came I was looking over at my co-workers food with envy, wanting to give up on the diet and the easy weight loss that it allowed. Overcome with energy, which I thought was strange, I decided to go for a walk to ease the hunger.

At the end of the day I had gone through four large reusable water bottles of the concoction. Many wonder about the taste of the diet drink, well – it is not something that you would drink for pleasure… Let me tell you that. I was happy to jump in bed the first night and dream of all of the foods that I was missing out on.

Weighing yourself daily is detrimental; therefore, I decided to weigh myself only when I had completed the term. Over the course of day two through four of the diet I was miserable. It could have been because of the headaches that I was experiencing, or the fact that I lacked the energy to exercise. Either way, I was bound and determined to make it to the end of the seven days.

Day five, I cracked – I had a salad made from lettuce and cucumbers with fat free salad dressing. I don’t know how this was going to impact my weight loss – but I was unable to go without food any longer. Considering that the nutritional value and calories in this food was very low, I thought that it might be fine.

The next two days I surrounded myself with the drink and the motivation that Beyonce had lost over twenty pounds following the diet. Finally, on the seventh day I decided to weigh myself in the morning as it is recommended that you do so with all diet plans. I was pleasantly surprised that I had lost eleven pounds.

The numbers may have shown on the scale but the state of my body and the realization that the weight would return as soon as I finished the diet plan were enough to make swear off fad diets in the future.
