Everyone has probably heard of the famous Cabbage Soup Diet that allows you a significant amount of weight loss within a short period of time. This may suit people that are getting married or need to look better in a bikini for a vacation but it shouldn’t be continued for any long length of time.
In general, soups are better eaten along side a well balance diet and can be a great way of increasing the intake of vegetables. They are often seen as a comfort food, although they can be enjoyed at any time of year. Soups can even be served cold in the summer and are very refreshing.
All the family will enjoy soup and by adding small pasta shapes of potatoes it can be a very filling meal. With the addition of bread or croutons, it is a real feast. Avoid if you can tinned or dry packet mixes, it is easier to make than you may imagine.
The basis of most soups is softened onion and a mixture of vegetables. Once sweated down then season and add some stock. It does not have to be home made stock in this case a cube or packet is fine use. If you have a glut of tomatoes, than they can produce batches of soup that you can then freeze for late consumption.
If you do want to make your own stock then use either vegetable, that are gone past their best or those in season and are therefore cheap. For a chicken stock utilize the carcass left over from your roast dinner, boil up with a few vegetables and then strain and use. All stocks can be put in the freezer so make a big batch.
Green pea soup can be made with frozen peas and is very easy. If you grow parsley in your garden that too will make a good soup. Once you have tried making soup you will realize how easy it is and before you know it, you’ll be experimenting.
If you prefer to follow a recipe then there are many good cookbooks that are just for the art of soup making. If you ever eat a nice soup at a restaurant or when out to dinner at a friend’s then make sure to ask for the recipe. Most people love to share their culinary secrets and enjoy pass on their passion.
Make sure to add different herbs and try new flavors look for recipes on the internet as this if a very good source. Another advantage to soup making is that once it is on a low simmer, it will just look after itself so it is not a type of cooking that involves constant stirring.

This could be a very interesting way of trying new recipes and finding out more about various countries and their own soup traditions. From Chinese to the Caribbean, a good French onion to a bonny scotch broth.
