older-coupleFor many people, once they’ve reached the age of 40, weight loss becomes much more difficult. For some individuals this may even start as early as their thirties.

Because this is the time in one’s life where there are a lot of physical changes taking place, it is very important for persons who are overweight to get a handle on it and even lose weight if necessary.   It is important to note that it won’t be as easy to lose weight after you turn 40 as it was when you were 25 so don’t get discouraged. This is for several reasons.

The metabolism slows down, people typically have less muscle and engage in fewer physical activities as they age.  They also often consume the same amount of calories as they did when they were younger. While this was once not a problem, suddenly it becomes one when a person begins to gain weight, have a hard time losing it and/or starts to develop chronic diseases.

There are so special considerations that must be made people when people are looking to lose weight after 40. Because physical activity and exercise is often sacrificed due to having a busy life, running a family or simply not enjoying exercise, it is important that persons over 40 get physical. They will need to have a consistent and well thought out exercise plan in place and then they must follow it.

Because the body begins to lose muscle after a certain age, it’s important for individuals to rebuild it through weight training. The less muscle that a person’s has, the less effective their metabolism will work and subsequently, the fewer calories they will burn.  This means that they will gain weight if they don’t exercise and watch what they eat.  Weight training can also protect women against osteoporosis. Therefore, strength training is not just for men but it is also a good idea for women to build their muscles through lifting weights.

Persons also need to watch what they eat.  This means decreasing the amount of bad fats, sugary foods and snacks that are consumed. It is not longer possible to get by eating like this though they could when they were younger. Instead, these types of foods should be replaced with lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and good fats. A person should be shooting for a balanced plate every time you eat.

It is also vital that persons over 40 start working on their abs.  Individuals with big stomachs have higher incidences of chronic diseases including heart problems. Therefore, it’s important to whittle down your middle as much as possible.

Losing weight after 40 will definitely be more challenging then if you are attempting to do so in your twenties. However, it still is possible. It will require that you work hard and that you make a concerted and consistent effort. You will also need to watch what you eat, increase exercise and add strength training to your regiment.  It is very important that you speak with your doctor prior to beginning any diet or exercise program so that they can ensure that you are healthy enough to begin one.
