The New Year has come and gone and those of you who have made the resolution to lose weight this year are most likely beginning to wonder why you are torturing yourself. Some of you may have already given up and raided the fridge.
Most of you are feeling down about your chances of success. And the majority of you are most likely ready to fall off the wagon altogether.
Every year millions of people resolve to lose weight. Only a very few of these people actually stick to their plan and succeed. Why do some people succeed where others fail? Quite simply, failure usually results from a lack of planning.
If you find yourself near the point of giving up you can take a step back and re-group. If you slip and “fall off the wagon” do not beat yourself up –you can easily pick your diet right back up and continue with your resolution.
If you have not set goals for your weight loss program, if you have no plan, you have no reason to continue when the going gets tough. This is the main reason many people fall off the dieting wagon and do not stay on their diet.
Setting goals and having a realistic diet plan will encourage you to stay on track; if you have given up you should go back and set goals for yourself and start over. It is never too late to begin again.
Here are a few tips that will help you get back on track when you have fallen off the dieting wagon.
• If you have not set goals for your weight loss you must do so immediately. Your goals need to be realistic. Determine where you want to be one month from now, two months from now, and write out an action plan for your resolution.
It is also an excellent idea to include short-term goals in your plan; easily reachable goals will give you an instantaneous sense of success and keep you motivated. Post your diet plan where you will see it every day and check often to see if you are on track.
• Keep yourself accountable with a dieting partner. Even if you do not know someone who needs to lose weight you can find a friend or family member who needs to improve their eating habits.
Work together to encourage each other through the dieting process. An accountability partner will be there to nudge you on when you feel like giving up and will help you celebrate your successes.
• If you have started your diet and find that you are always hungry you need to make some changes. If you are constantly hungry there is almost no chance of keeping your New Year’s resolution.
Don’t become discouraged, quickly find a diet that is nutritious and includes small meals and healthy snacks throughout the day. Making this change is not to be considered a failure – it is just a tune-up on your road to success.
• Make sure you move! Dieting alone will not help you lose weight and keep the pounds off for good. In order to keep your New Year’s resolution you need to make a conscious effort to change your entire lifestyle.
You must change your diet and your exercise habits. Regular exercise is a great way to keep your resolution as it actually makes you feel as if you are accomplishing something. You may not see immediate results but you will feel them.
Allow yourself to succeed. The ability to keep your New Year’s diet resolution rests with you. Make a determined effort to meet your goals everyday and you will begin to see a real payoff for your effort.
