Gaining weight is one of the easiest things in the world to do. It doesn’t take any practice or training. The only thing that you are required to be able to do is eat. After a holiday season, it is not unheard of to pack on an extra 10-15 pounds. Although weight gain is easy enough, losing it can be extremely difficult. Most people will go on multiple diets in their life, with some people simply giving up and accepting defeat.
This does not have to be the case. Sure, it will likely be challenging to lose weight but it is not impossible if you understand how to approach it so that you give yourself the best chance possible to be successful. One must have is a food journal. These often get overlooked when it is time to begin a diet. This is a huge mistake by the dieter and just may end up sabotaging his or her efforts.
A food journal can be a huge help to persons looking to lose weight. To use them most effectively, they should be utilized to keep track of what you eat prior to starting and during a diet. Keeping a journal before you start your diet will give you some insight into just how much you are eating. Many people drastically underestimate how much food they put in their mouth and are surprised at how much weight they have gained over the years. A food journal will give them an accurate picture of just how many calories they are consuming.
Having some idea of the number of calories that you are eating will do 2 things. It will give you a wake up call and may also give you some encouragement. If you realize that you are eating 4,000 calories a day when you should only be eating 2000, you will be able to identify the foods that you need to cut out and then do just that. If you find that you are eating four desserts a day and realize that you can lose weight and get by with just 1, you may discover that you don’t have to give up everything or go on a severely restrictive diet to lose weight, you only need to slightly modify what you are currently eating.
This can be a huge relief for some people and may give them the encouragement that they need to start and stay on a weight loss program. Many people are frightened to start a diet because they think that they will have to survive on carrot sticks and water for the next 30 days. This does not have to be the case.
A food journal can also give you a big wake up call. You will quickly find out just how much food that you have been eating. No longer be it be possible to conveniently forget that you ate 4 pieces of chocolate cake and 3 Snicker bars the night before. Instead, it will be in your face, in black and white. You will be forced to ask yourself the hard questions like “Why?”, “When and how did I start eating so much?” and “How do I do better?”
