If you have ever tried to lose weight, you have undoubtedly come across the grapefruit diet plan. This diet requires that you consume massive amounts of grapefruit and grapefruit juice. It is largely considered a fad diet. However, it is quite effective and not only because you are required to lower your caloric intake. Grapefruit has a number of properties that aid in weight loss, namely they contain a good amount of fiber and positively affects insulin levels.
Because it is nearly impossible to exist on the grapefruit diet forever, it is necessary to find ways to incorporate this fruit in your diet without starving yourself. There a number of ways to do this. You can eat several grapefruits throughout the day. If you would rather not eat the actual fruit, you can drink grapefruit juice instead. Drinking 3-4 glasses a day and eating 2-3 whole grapefruits a day can be very beneficial.
There was a study done by the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center at Scripps Clinic that found that drinking grapefruit juice and/or eating the actual fruit helped people lose weight without significantly changing their diet or exercise habits. The study lasted for roughly 4 months and included 100 women and men. The individuals that ate half of a grapefruit before every meal were able to lose 3.6 pounds. Persons that drank 3 glasses of grapefruit juice over this same time period, lost 3.3 pounds.
The study participants were asked to continue to eat the foods that they normally did but to increase the amount of exercise that they engaged in. The only thing that they were required to change in their diet was the consumption of grapefruit juice or grapefruit.
Grapefruit helps people lose weight because it affects their insulin levels in a positive way. Insulin levels affect weight loss and weight gain. When the insulin levels are reduced and/or controlled, it is easier to lose weight. Insulin helps to regulate the fat metabolism. When it is out of control and often spiked, weight gain is likely, as is fat accumulation. If you can limit these spikes, you will likely be more successful at losing weight and keeping it off. Grapefruit is believed to be able to control insulin levels and thus less fat is stored in the body.
Grapefruit can be quite beneficial for all people, especially those that are looking to lose weight. Grapefruit has a good deal of fiber and keeps insulin levels from spiking. Â Fiber helps individuals feel less hungry and thus acts as an appetite suppressant. One of the toughest things about dieting is not eating foods that you normally would and that you enjoy. Being forced to cut back on calories typically causes strong cravings causing many people to fail at diets because they can not control themselves and either eat too much or the wrong things .Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can help persons fight cravings.
Grapefruit is also believed to help prevent insulin levels from spiking. High levels of insulin can lead to weight gain and fat accumulation. Eating 3-4 servings of grapefruit juice a day, preferably before meals, or 2-3 grapefruit every day can give you these benefits. It is important to note that grapefruit and grapefruit juice can not be taken with certain medications. Therefore, speak with your doctor before adding this fruit to your diet.
