exerciseMost people understand that they should exercise but many individuals think that they only reason they should work out is to lose weight.  However, exercising has many more benefits then simply losing weight. In this post we are going to take a more comprehensive look at exercise and why it is important. Below, we are going to discuss 10 reasons why you should exercise.

1.  Exercise burns calories:  Your body will burn so many calories each day just to keep you alive and functioning. Exercise allows you to burn additional calories so that you can lose weight.  Roughly 3500 calories make up one pound.  If you plan on losing 1-2 pounds a week (which is generally recommended) you will need to find a way to either cut back and/or burn between 3500 and 7000 calories.  This can be very difficult if you are relying solely on diet.  Physical fitness allows you to avoid going on a very restrictive diet because you can get rid of some of those calories through exercise.

2.  Exercise builds muscle: Building muscle is an important part of improving the functioning of your metabolism and burning calories while at rest. The amount of muscle that you have will determine if your body burns a lot of calories or if they become extra pounds and fat.  A simple weight training program along with some type of aerobic exercise can help you build muscle.

3. Exercise allows you to should consume a more flexible diet: When you exercise you don’t have to worry about eating as strictly as you would if you do not.  For example, if your goal is to get rid of an extra 1000 calories per day, you will need to cut back significantly on the types and amount of food you eat.  If you exercise, you can alternatively burn 500 calories through exercise and then find a way to get rid of 500 calories in your diet. This may be simple as passing on that daily Big Mac.

4. Exercise Relieves Stress:  We live in a time where life is very stressful. The economy is bad, both parents have to work in order to make ends meet and families have to be managed.  Overall, there’s a lot going on.  Exercising releases feel good hormones in our brains and helps us to release some stress.

5. Exercise slows down aging:  Exercise can help you look younger longer. When you’re fit, toned and in shape, you’ll likely look younger then your age.

6. Exercise helps to build up the immune system:  Persons who are healthy and fit tend to get sick less and have stronger immune systems.

7. Exercise helps ward off chronic diseases:  Persons who suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure can benefit a lot from exercising. In some cases this may prevent the onset of such diseases.

8. Exercise strengthens bones:  It has been found that weightlifting helps to make the bones stronger and help prevent osteoporosis in women.

9. Exercise tones and shapes the body: Many people attempt to lose weight without exercising and they end up flabby instead of toned and shapely.

10. Exercise strengthens the mind: When you push yourself further then you thought was possible you begin to feel better about yourself and more confident.
