It’s no secret. The number of children in the United States that are either overweight or obese is growing at an alarming rate. There is plenty of blame to go around as it regards who is at fault. Depending on who you talk to the reason for this epidemic will differ.

Some people believe that it is due to the abundance processed foods in the American diet, fast food restaurants, video games and a lack of exercise. Whatever the cause, it is important that each individual to ensure that the children in their care are as healthy and fit as possible. One way to accomplish this is to make sure that kids stay active.

Getting your children to be active may be pretty difficult at first. Many kids would rather spend all day on the computer or the internet instead of outside playing or getting exercise. It may take some convincing and you may have to pull rank to make sure that it happens. However, it will be worth the arguments and cajoling to make sure that your kids get an adequate amount of exercise. Below, we will take a look at several simple ways to help your kids get and stay active. Â

a. Set limits: It is important to set limits in your home. Set aside for them only a few hours each week to watch to many television, play video games or stay on the computer. When the have utilized this time, require them to spend the rest of their time outside or in some type of physical activity.

b. Find things that they enjoy: Find physical activity that your kids enjoy. This will increase the likelihood that they still with it. Ask them what they like and encourage them to try different things.

c. Keep track: Keep track of how many hours they work out each month. Perhaps give them some type of reward for each hour that they work out.

d. Set goals: Have your kids set fitness goals. They may want to increase how many laps that they run around the track or lower their time in the mile. Encourage them to come up with personal fitness goals.

e. Reward: Lastly, reward them. This will help get them excited about sticking to a fitness plan. You may want to hand out tangible rewards like toys or clothes or you can give them special privileges around the house such as more t.v. time or reduced chores.

Instances of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and weight bearing skeletal issues are beginning to become common in young children. One way to decrease these problems in your own children is to ensure that they follow a healthy diet and that they exercise. There are many different ways to get them active. Set limits, find things that they enjoy, keep track of how much the exercise, set goals and then reward them for being active, are some very good ways to keep them healthy and fit.
