treadmillDepending on where you live, whether or not you should run indoors or outdoors may not be much of a debate around this time of year. If you live in a city where there is a “real” winter season then you have no choice but to run indoors on the treadmill or risk frostbite (or at least getting really cold). However, the Spring time is getting closer and pretty soon, in a few short months at least, the weather will start warming up. Some people, having become attached to their treadmills will be hesitant to give them up for the great outdoors. But is this a good idea? Which is really better, the treadmill or road running (tracks and sidewalks count too!)? Well, the answer is not a simple one. It depends.

If you have a tight schedule and don’t see the outdoors unless it is 5:00 a.m. or 9:00p.m., then you may not have a choice but to use the treadmill. However, if your days are more flexible and you can actually get outdoors when it is still light, then running outside may be more enjoyable. Outdoor running is also better for people that are training and/or who want to be able to change up their exercises. Running outside also tends to be harder on the joints. The treadmill is a little bit easier on the body and may be a better option for people concerned about this.

Some people simply have busy lives. They may work during the day and then have to play chauffer in the evenings for young kids or teenagers. For these people, it is very difficult to get outdoors while there is still daylight to go for a jog. The time just isn’t there. In these cases, a treadmill is the perfect choice. They can still get everything done that needs to be and then take some time at the end of the day to workout.

On the other hand, there are people who have plenty of time (well at least enough) to get in a 30 minute road run. If these individuals enjoy the outdoors and want to get outside and carry their own weight around, then running outdoors is the better choice.

If you are training just to challenge your self, are a “weekend warrior” or want to participate in some type of race (ex. 5k, 10k or marathon) it is best to run outside. You will be able to get in better shape. Treadmills tend to overestimate how fast you are really going and also do some of the work for you. You are not carrying all of your weight and so you are not getting as good a workout. While it is ok to train on the treadmill when it is cold outside, as soon as you can get outside, make sure that you do. You will appreciate your extra efforts when it is time to compete or race. You won’t be huffing, puffing, panting and wanting to quit.
