Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

Every holiday season people loosen their belt buckles anticipating the huge feasts to come. They are ready to eat everything in sight. By January 2, a lot of people regret how much food they ate and those holiday pounds they gained. How many times has this been you? I have been there. In fact, I am going through it right now. Looking back, I can pinpoint where I went wrong during the holidays. I will give you all several tips to make sure you do not gain those five pounds after the holidays like I did.

1. Pick Healthy Foods to Eat at Parties

Just because it is the holidays does not mean you can not eat healthy. When that next holiday party comes up, stop and look for a veggie platter or a fruit platter. Do not go straight for the sugar or carb loaded treats. These treats may taste good but think about what you will look like afterwards if you have too many.

Keep Exercising

A lot of people slow down or forget about their workout routines during the holidays. I know I did. There is no excuse for this. A lot of people will claim to be too busy.  If you are too busy, then make time to workout from your home. Get a basketball or a jump rope. You can find a way to exercise if you put your mind to it. Even doing regular crunches and pushups will help to loose weight. Another piece of advice is to make sure you adjust your workout plan to the holidays. Since your schedule probably changes, you should be able to incorporate more work out time than usual due to days off of work.

Bring Healthy Snacks to Work

This should be a no brainer.  Bring healthy snacks with you to work. If you do, you may not be as tempted to reach for the office donuts or brownies.   A great alternative to is go to health food stores and farmers markets. You can go here and buy some fresh fruits and vegetables to bring to work with you. If you do not want fruits and vegetables, there is always nuts and trail mix you could bring as a snack.

Eat Before Holiday Events

This is a great piece of advice for anyone that wants to save their waistline during the holiday season.  If you know your office is having a party, make sure to eat a healthy well balanced meal beforehand. This way you are less likely to over eat when you go to holiday parties. It is also a great idea to drink a cold class of water before you eat as well. This will make you feel fuller before you start eating.

Do Not Drink Alcohol

If you are serious about avoiding holiday weight gain, please avoid drinking alcohol if at all possible. Although alcohol may taste good, it is very high in calories. The high calories count does not offer you anything in return as far as nutrients or any other health benefits. If you drink alcohol during the holidays, you will end up with a hangover and a potbelly.

I hope you enjoyed these tips to avoid holiday weight gain.  Good Luck!
