Obesity is one of the largest epidemics facing our country. The percentage of children and adults suffering from obesity is rising with each passing year. Unfortunately, obesity is not only an epidemic but it is causing many other disorders within the body. Up to three hundred thousand people per year die from obesity and other disorders which are affected by their weight.
Individuals are considered to be obese when their body mass index, which is determined by the height of the individual compared to the weight of the individual, is over thirty. There are many calculators and charts available on the internet which can be used to calculate body mass index based on these factors.
What other disorders are caused by obesity? Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even multiple types of cancers are more common in those patients that are considered obese. The types of cancer that are associated with an increased risk if the patient is obese are; endometrial, colon, prostate, kidney and cancer of the gallbladder. Even breast cancer can be a heightened risk for those patients considered obese, especially in post menopausal patients.
There are many repercussions from carrying even a little extra weight, as little as ten to twenty pounds can increase the risk of death. This risk is increased when the extra weight is carried around the midsection. When the patient has this weight gain, there is an increased risk, of nearly double of the patient developing type-two diabetes.
There are many ways that obesity can be prevented. Consuming an excessive amount of calories per day that you burn should be avoided as this combined with sedentary lifestyles can lead to a weight gain of nearly twenty pounds per year. There are many factors which can increase the chances of one becoming obese and these should all be avoided – these factors include:
-Â Consuming excessive calories, more than you burn per day
-Â Living a sedentary lifestyle
-Â Consuming high amounts of sugar and refined fats
-Â Not following the food guide when eating
There are many procedures which are used to treat patients suffering from obesity. It is important to attempt dieting, calorie cutting and a rigid exercise program to ensure that the body is given a chance to lose weight the natural and healthy way. Through this method the average weight loss that a patient will experience is between one and two pounds per week. At this rate, the weight should remain off of the body as long as the weight loss program is being adhered to.
