Gardening And The Healthier You

.

gardeningAll dieticians agree that for a healthy lifestyle you should eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and get some regular daily exercise.Easier said than done I hear you say and its true, in the frenetic world we live in its not easy to fit in the time necessary to prepare a lot of fresh food and find the time for a daily exercise session.

However, most people have a garden, balcony, patio or failing that, a window box and that’s all that’s needed to combine a little gentle exercise with a pleasing pastime and help you eat better all at the same time.

Nothing tastes better than a tomato or carrot that you’ve grown yourself; somehow they seem to have more flavour, less pesticides and other chemicals too!

For those who live alone you may find that just buying two carrots or three tomatoes seems a bit time wasting (especially when they’ve sat in the fridge for a week before being consigned to the trash) but growing them yourself means you pick them when you want them, no waste, fresh anytime, ready when you are.

Of course it’s also cheaper to grow some food yourself than to buy it and nowadays that’s always a good thing.

Some people feel that gardening is hard work, true, it can be if done on a grand scale but looking after a few pots on a patio or even a few tomato and pepper plants on a windowsill although requiring a little daily bending and stretching could not be called gruelling exercise.

There are people who say they can’t find the time for gardening but everyone can find 10 minutes a day which is all that’s required and the pleasure of growing something yourself should not be underestimated.

The variety of different seeds available now is incredible, many have been developed especially for those that have little growing room and even the humble tomato comes in so many varieties now its even bewildering; yellow, orange, red, purple, nearly black, striped, plum shaped, small, tiny, large, normal, extra huge size, small bushes, trailing, tall, thin and it goes on.

Whatever the size of gardening area you have available, whether your tastes run to the traditional or exotic you can be sure that something will catch your eye and you’ll find it in the “size” you require.

Simple ingredients often make the tastiest meals and what could be more appetising than a freshly picked juicy tomato sliced and mixed with some low fat cheese and a slice of nutty granary bread to accompany it.

Tasty, quick to prepare, healthy, low fat and appealing to the eye. A fresh, washed pepper halved and topped with lean bacon, low fat grated cheese, breadcrumbs and herbs grilled for a few minutes until golden brown, all natural flavours, low in calories and high in taste.

Place a few pots on your windowsill and your diet will become healthier and tastier and probably more varied too.
