cereals

There is nothing easier to prepare for breakfast than putting some dry cereal in a bowl and then filling it with milk.

The problem with this is, however, that you may be being duped by the brightly colored boxes and wide variety of cereals in offer at your local store. It is important to look further than this advertising and realise what you should really be looking for if you want to keep healthy.

The following explains how you should do this. It does not make time and it is not hard to do.

Looking for cereals that have an abundance of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs is essential. All products these days have a nutritional facts label on the packaging that you should be paying attention to. This will tell you exactly what the product contains and should be able to help make you decide on what to buy.

Buying cereals that are listed is whole grain etc. is the first thing that you should be attracted by, and avoid those products which contain unnatural colorings or flavors. You do not have to worry quite so much about this if you have a generally healthy diet anyway which is rich in vegetables and fruits and other natural, but low-fat products.

It is also important to choose a cereal that has no more than five grams of sugar per serving and if you want to add natural and healthy sweeteners to it, just use sliced fruits such as strawberries or raisins.

Cereals that have three grams or more of fibre per serving are also some you want to be looking out for. Whole grain cereals such as shredded wheat and oat based cereals are a good example of these healthier options.

Very important to remember is that many cereals are not good enough in this respect and some may even contain as much as ten grams per serving and when you have two or three servings as many people do in the morning, then you are getting far more sugar than you need.

Basic oats in the form of porridge are extremely effective in lowering cholesterol quickly and effectively by absorbing it from your digestive tract.

Just to recap on the above, make sure you look beyond the advertising and read the facts on the nutrition label and avoid shopping when you are hungry, since you will be far more tempted just to opt for the junk food options.

You can help to keep your breakfast healthy by sticking to non or low-fat milk and adding fresh sliced fruits to the cereals which will give you extra fibre.
