home-exerciseIf you are person who is often short on time but still have a desire to workout, you’ll be happy to know that there are number of exercises that you can do at home that will help you get in shape or maintain your current fitness level. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars for a fitness membership. You can improve your cardiovascular health and lose weight without ever leaving your neighborhood. Below, is short list of simple exercises you can perform at home.

1. Jumping Jacks: These are the exercises that you performed in grade school gym class. They are extremely easy and simple to do. They are also great for building up your cardiovascular health. If you haven’t exercised in a while, start slow. You’re not 10 anymore. Try 3 sets of 50. If this is too much, too soon, shoot for 3 sets of 25 and then build up.

2. Jump Rope: Jumping rope is an excellent way to get in shape. It is also extremely inexpensive. It only requires a jump rope and some space. Head outdoors or to your garage so that you have ample room. Three sets of 100, should give you a good workout.

3. Fitness Videos: Fitness videos are an excellent way to get in shape at home. You can pick one that meets your current fitness level and then purchase tougher ones as your fitness level improves.

4. Resistance Band Workouts: Fitness bands can build up your cardiovascular system, burn calories and develop muscles. These are absolutely fantastic for firming and toning. If you stick with these, you should see results in a pretty short amount of time. That is if you follow a sensible diet that is low in fat and are consistent with your work outs. To get the most out of these, perform some type of aerobic exercise a few times a week as well.

5. Walking and Jogging: If you live in a relatively safe neighborhood and you feel comfortable venturing out, walking and jogging make very good exercises. One of the best benefits is that both are free. It just takes you and some effort (and oh yeah, clothing and shoes). You can walk and jog for as long as you want and increase the speed and length of your walks or runs as you get in better shape.

6. Weight Lifting: You can purchase a cheap set of weights at a sporting goods store or Wal-Mart and lift weights in your basement or garage. Unless, you are training for a weight lifting competition, you really can perform just about all of the exercises that you need to right at home.

If you don’t have a gym membership and have no desire to get one, it is still important to exercise. Fortunately, there are many great exercises that you can do from the comfort of your own home that don’t cost any money or very little. If you are imaginative enough  and are willing to put in the effort, you can get in just as good a workout, if not a better one than you can at a fitness center.

Exercise And Stress

stress

We live in a day and age where stress abounds. Long working hours, family responsibility, a poor economy and terroristic threats can cause even the most stalwart person to feel stressed out. There are a number of ways that people handle stress. They may go to counseling, take anti-anxiety medication or silently stew. Another option is to get moving. Exercise can do a great deal in helping individuals feel more relaxed and centered.

Stress can have many negative effects on the body. Overtime, it can cause disease, lack of sleep and “sensitive” nerves, even seemingly minor things can set you off. Because you can’t totally eliminate stress, you must find ways to deal with it. Exercise is one way to limit the negative effects of stress. It is free, it can be done almost any time and it also has a number of other benefits such as weight loss and a healthy body.

Exercise also helps you feel less tense, improves your mood, gives you a chance to just get away, think things out and feel more in control of you life.

One safe and legal way to deal with emotions that overwhelm you is to get moving. This can be especially helpful when you need a way to deal with your feelings and don’t have many options at your disposal. Lifting weights, kick boxing, running and cycling are all ways to work out any anger or frustration issues that you are dealing with. You can used your negative emotions as fuel. You turn what could cause harm to your body into something that can strengthen it and improve your health.

When we are angry and upset for long periods of time, our bodies can begin to increase the production of “stress hormones” such as cortisol. These can cause weight gain, which can in turn make you feel even worse about yourself. When you are active and exercise, the production of these chemicals lessens. Instead, your body begins to release endorphins which help you feel better. This is why you generally feel so much better after you exercise even if you were stressed and tired before you began.

Exercising can not only help control your weight, but also aids in improving your mood. Working out is also a great way to distract you from your problems at least for a little while. It provides a physical and emotional respite during times  that you need it most. You have probably seen athletes that have just gone through some type of trauma play in a game shortly thereafter. This might seem crazy for some people but that athlete knows that getting out and performing can help take their mind off of what is going on, even it is only for a few hours. You don’t have to be a famous athlete for this to be relevant. Taking an hour long jog or walk during a stressful time can do wonders.

Exercise has so many benefits, physically, emotionally and psychologically. It can help you deal with stress and also help to prevent its’ affects on your body and mind. It is a good idea to schedule slots of time that are just dedicated for you to workout. You will find that the benefits are tremendous especially as it relates to stress.

How to Get Through A Tough Workout

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

workoutWorking out is an important part of weight loss. It is possible to lose weight without exercise. However, the results won’t last as long and it will be much more difficult to keep the weight off. Exercising  helps to tone your body so you will look much more trim and fit. People that lose weight without exercise often end up looking flabby. This is not ideal. Most people want to look good naked or when they (women) are wearing revealing clothes. It you do not look toned and in shape, you really do yourself a disservice. Even though there are so many obvious benefits to working out, it can be difficult to hang in there during a tough workout. Below, are some tips to help keep you going even when you want to quit.

a. Listen to Music: Listening to a collection of your favorite songs can go along way in getting you through a workout. Try to pick songs that are upbeat, uplifting and positive. If you concentrate on the songs and the messages, you will find that you are better able to push through a tiring and painful workout.
b. Focus On Something Else (Anything Else): Whatever you do, don’t continuously think about how tough your workout is and how you whish that you could just quit. Why? Because you likely will quit. Instead, focus on the person jogging in front of you, the beautiful landscape, what you have to cook for dinner, the song that you are listening to or the sound of your feet hitting the pavement. If you can get your mind off of your pain and tiredness, you have a real shot of making it through your workout.
c. Think About Your Goals: Hopefully, you have set goals in regards to your workouts. Perhaps you want to be able to jog one mile instead of walk it. You may want to increase your speed or the distance that you run. Whatever, you personal goals are, think of them when you are considering not working out or quitting. If you don’t have any goals, get some, pronto.
d. Remember that Pain Is Weakness Leaving The Body: I know that this sounds like something an old coach would tell you but it is true. When you are pushing yourself, you really are becoming stronger both mentally and physically. Keep this in mind when you are tempted to give up.
e. Count: Some fitness experts and avid exercisers swear that counting helps to keep them going. For example, you may want to count to 30 over and over until you no longer want to quit. This probably works because it keeps your mind on something else besides the pain from exercising.

f. Put It In Perspective: Remind yourself that it is just exercise. Think of things that you have gone through that have been much more difficult then exercise. For example, if you routinely work 50 hours a week and then come home to take care of your family, these actions are much harder then exercise. Knowing that you have faced tougher things then exercising, will help you put things in perspective.

g. Come Up With A Catch Phrase: Come up with a catch phrase or personal motto. This will help encourage you. It can be whatever you want. Find something that motivates you and then repeat it to yourself over and over when your workouts start getting tough.
