What to Look for When Choosing a New Gym

Friday, January 9th, 2009

paradise20walk20women27s20gymWorkout facilities range from functional to state of the art. Whether your old gym is closing or you have recently relocated there are many reasons that one may seek a new gym. Use these decision making aspects when trying to choose a new gym location to accommodate your fitness schedule.

Location, location, location. Location is one of the most crucial aspects of finding a new gym. If the gym is too far away from your home than chances are that you are not going to venture all the way across town to work out! If you spend more time travelling to the gym than inside of the gym it is going to greatly decrease the motivation that you have to go to the gym.

Hours. Hours is second most important to location. Believe it or not, the hours that the gym is open are only part of the limits to be considered. What hours do you frequent the gym and is there a good availability of equipment and staff services at these hours? Are you able to work out comfortable without the gym becoming overpopulated through peak times? Take these hours into account with your regular schedule to determine if the operating hours are a good fit for you.

Equipment. What type of equipment does the gym stock? Most gyms offer a vast majority of cardio machines combined with a free weight section as well as a weight machine section of the gym. In smaller gyms, waiting for your cardio machine to complete your workout can take valuable minutes from your schedule. Ensure there are enough machines to accommodate all patrons of the gym to make the most of your time.

Instructed Classes. Instructed classes can keep you interested while learning new things. Most gyms offer a variety of classes from kickboxing and yoga, to the traditional hip-hop and water aerobics. Do these classes come at an extra cost? All of these aspects are things to keep in mind while making your decision. Are these classes offered at times which would fit well and be convenient with your schedule? Taking part in these classes can be a welcome change to your workout.

Amenities. What types of amenities are offered at your chosen gym location? Many gym memberships come with the added benefit of childcare throughout the duration of your workout. Other gyms offer complimentary shampoo, lotion and even razors with premium memberships. Does parking come at an extra cost at the gym? Spending valuable money on parking could limit the times per week that one chooses to hit the gym. Keep in mind that the more amenities a gym offers, the higher the premium for membership pricing.

Membership Fees. As with many other things in life, you get what you pay for. Membership fees should remain the same month after month and be feasible within your income and budget. Membership perks include parking, childcare and access to instructed classes at some gyms. Elite memberships are available at many gyms that offer private facilities, workout rooms and access to spa services.
