Are Your Hormones Making You Fat?

hormonesMany people don’t understand that there are quite a few physiological factors that can go into causing you to gain weight. Most people assume that if you eat a low-calorie, balanced diet that doesn’t include a lot of sugar or high-fat foods and if you exercise consistently, you should have no problem losing weight.  For some people this is true. However, for others, there maybe things going on beneath the surface that are causing them to gain weight.

One of those things includes hormones that are out of whack. One hormone that most people know very little is Leptin.  Leptin is manufactured by our fat cells and it helps to control both our metabolism and also our appetite.  When it is not in proper balance it can cause us to want to eat all the time and slow down our metabolism which can lead to weight gain.

Because our metabolism suddenly needs a boost and we are getting signals to eat all of the time, you can see how this is a recipe for weight gain. Many people who have trouble with their weight are having problems with this hormone they just may not know it. Some of the following symptoms are common in individuals who are suffering from problems with their leptin system.  They include being tired all the time, having trouble sleeping,  gaining weight around ones stomach, increased or high blood pressure, acne, infertility and for women, growing facial hair.  Individuals may feel very tired because instead of their body using food as fuel its instead turning it into the fat.  This can cause you to feel tired, gain weight and also can make your other hormones get out of whack.

Thankfully, there are some ways to repair your leptin system.  Because leptin is created by the fat cells, as we gain more weight and more fat, the process becomes cyclcia. When we eat more calories then we can burn off, leptin works overtime to try to keep the weight off.  After a while, the pathways that leptin uses to get to our brains, can no longer be used.  Therefore when leptin tries to tell us to stop eating or tries to rev up our metabolism, those messages don’t get to the brain.  As a result, we begin to store more fat, that fat creates more leptin, which crowds the pathways and causes further breakdown.

To reverse the damage, it is very important that individuals to first discover whether or not they have a problem and then to take the proper actions.  Some very easy things that can be done include the decreasing stress levels, getting enough rest and eating smaller meals throughout the day.
