If you are overweight, you have probably read or heard about a number of different methods to help you lose weight. Fasting, fad diets, diet pills and good ole exercise have probably all been suggested to you at one time or another.
It can get really confusing and difficult to know what really works without turning yourself into a human guinea pig and trying everything yourself. Because you probably don’t have the time, money or desire to try everything on the market that promises to help you lose weight, we are going to provide you a little insight into one of the more popular and controversial weight loss methods, colon cleansing. There are claims that a simple colon cleanse can enable you to lose 5-10 pounds in a matter of days. But is it too good to be true?
Colon cleansers have been touted as a super fast and easy way to get rid of a few extra pounds. The basis for their use is the contention that everyone (or just about everyone) has an extra 5-10 pounds of old food, mucus and crud trapped in our intestines. Cleaning it out will enable them to not only get rid of the extra weight but also the belly bloat that it causes. Many of the products on the market promise to work after only a few days. While their use may seem tempting, their purported results seem almost too good to be true. Are they?
Well, everyone that I know who has had their colon cleansed in an effort to lose weight has been disappointed. One friend had a colonic and another used a popular colon cleansing system promoted on many late night infomercials. What did they get from their trouble? Nothing. The friend that had the colonic was told that she would need to come back 6 times at $60 a pop to see results and my other buddy never did see any of the disgusting stools made up of 20 year old red meat that she was promised at the website. Neither lost those promised 5-10 pounds.
Right now colon cleansers for weight loss are trendy but this does not mean that they are effective. Manufacturers that sell them are looking to cash in on a desperate demographic that is looking for effective, simple and fast ways to lose weight. Because none of their claims have to be proven, they continue to sell pipe dreams to millions of men and women.
There is some debate over whether or not colon cleansers are even needed. Some health professionals believe that the body has all of the tools that it needs to keep the colon clean. Of course, this may not be true for persons that have trouble having bowel movements on their own. In these cases, assistance may be required. It just might not take the form of colon cleansers being plugged on television or found in your local Wal-Mart or drug store. Many of these are ineffective and even may contain harmful ingredients. Instead of using them, talk with your doctor. They should be able to give you a safe, effective option to help you move your bowels.
Are colon cleansers effective for weight loss? While there are many claims, there is not much good, objective proof to back them up. So at this point, I would definitely pass.
