fat-personMany people are hesitant to quit smoking (especially women) because they fear that they will gain weight. Some people smoke because they see it as a way to help control or maintain their weight. Of course, once a person does start smoking, it is incredibly difficult to quit due to physical (that good ole’ nicotine) and a psychological (stress, habit, surroundings) addictions. However, some people are reluctant to stop, even though they know that it is bad for them, because they are scared that they will become “fat”. These feelings are not without merit. Most smokers will gain at least 10 pounds once they stop smoking. However, with a little forward thinking and effort, it is possible to avoid becoming a statistic.

One of the most important ways to avoid gaining weight after you stop smoking is to have a plan. While you are in the process of quitting, start looking into how to eat properly and healthily. Find a good exercise plan and then begin it as soon as possible. This pre-planning and then subsequent action, will get you used to exercising and eating right. If you are dedicated to the plan, you will likely find yourself losing weight before you even quit.

Many people gain weight after they stop smoking because they eat when they crave a smoke. As a result, one addiction replaces another. Once you have gotten used to eating well and exercising, you should be able to keep it up even after you stop smoking. This is because you have disciplined yourself.

On the other hand, if you simply quit and then hope for the best, you will likely fail. In fact, the odds that you start smoking again or overeating, increase substantially. When people stop smoking, this is often traumatic. To soothe themselves, people often use food to cope and or to satisfy their oral fixations. If you have not considered this and/or created an action plan to avoid it, you make it easier to fail.

Another good tip is to find a hobby or at least an activity that you find fulfilling. This could be anything that you enjoy. It needs to be something that is readily available to you. You may find that overtime, as you discover what may be undiscovered gifts, you may begin to feel so good about yourself that you don’t want to smoke again. Your ability to beat a strong addiction will also give you increased confidence and may prevent you from sabotaging your progress by overeating.

Many times, people reach for their cigarettes when they are stressed, upset and/or sad. These issues will eventually need to be addressed or it will difficult to beat this addiction and avoid replacing their cigarette addiction with a food addiction. Once a person is able to detox from the nicotine, the addiction largely becomes psychological. If a person is able to discover what these issues are and then deal with them, they may find that it much easier to stay clean and also to avoid becoming an eating addict (which will obviously lead to weight gain).
