Adults are not the only segment of the population that needs to lose weight. A growing number of children, adolescents and teenagers are also faced with the prospect of growing older while being overweight.
The negative consequences of being at an unhealthy weight are many, and well-publicized. This can lead to chronic disease, heart problems, skeletal issues and a loss of self-esteem. Below, we are going to discuss five tips to help teenagers lose weight.
Many teens, like adults when needing to lose weight, choose to go on restrictive diet. This is a big no-no for several reasons. Obviously, such diets are hard to maintain because it’s very difficult to not eat enough calories or to not consume the types of foods that you like. However, for teenagers it even more dangerous because during this phase of their development they need calories in order to properly grow. Therefore, a teenager should not necessarily go on the same diet as an adult if they are still growing. Instead, this takes us to our second tip. They should increase the amount of physical activity that they engage in.
Exercise helps keep the body strong, tone the muscles and also gives teens a little leeway when it’s comes to eating. They will be able to occasionally have their favorite snacks or meals without hampering their weight loss efforts. This makes it more likely that they will stick their diet. Therefore, exercise is very key. It also builds endurance and confidence.
If a teenager is severely overweight, they should visit their doctor. Their physician will be able to provide them with tools and suggestions that can help them lose weight. They may even prescribe some type of diet pill. Prescription diet pills are generally much more effective than those that can be purchased over the counter. Also, since it will be given under the supervision of a doctor, there are less chances of complications and problems.
Teenagers should also look to find a support group. This could take the form of weight loss camps or online communities that cater to overweight teens. There may also be relevant, local meetings or groups in one’s area. These types of gatherings let teens know that they are not alone. Also, the support from others can encourage them to work out, eat healthy and lose weight.
Lastly, teenagers should set goals and then come up with rewards once they reach certain milestones. For example, once they lose 10 pounds perhaps Mom and Dad can take them shopping or they might receive some type of special privilege at home. The goal here is to keep them focused and looking ahead.
