BMI Calculators and How They Work




The Body mass index, or BMI, is a measurement which compares a person’s weight and height. The BMI is used to determine whether someone is of normal weight, overweight, or obese, even though it does not actually measure a person’s fat. The BMI is used for all adults, both men and women, and can be a useful tool in evaluating healthy weight status.

The BMI is calculated by taking by dividing someone’s weight (in kilograms) by their height (in meters) squared (weight/height2). A BMI from 18.5 to 25 is considered normal, while a BMI of 25 to 30 is overweight. A BMI above 30 is obese.

The BMI measurement does have limitations to its ability to accurately diagnosis obesity. If a person is big boned and/or muscular, such as an athlete, their BMI may reflect being overweight or even obese, when in fact muscle and bone weigh more than fat. Along the same lines, if one has a lot of fat, but little muscle, such as an elderly person, their BMI may be artificially deflated. They may register in the normal category, but they may have a large, unhealthy proportion of fat. However, using the BMI can be helpful in measuring the ideal proportion of fat versus lean mass of a person.

Controlling the BMI can be an effective means of monitoring healthy weight and weight loss. The most simple, but not necessarily the easiest, way to maintain a healthy BMI is to eat healthy foods. This can be made easier by taking a diet pill to curb excess hunger. Incorporating foods from all of the food groups and trying to adhere to the food pyramid is a great way to start. Many fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grain products constitute a healthy diet. The recommended diet consists of 15% of daily calories from protein, 30% from fat, and 55% from carbohydrates.

Exercise is another great way to lower and maintain the BMI. Not only is fat burned while exercising, but muscle is built. Muscle burns fat calories when someone is not exercising. Increasing the lean muscle mass will decrease the fat content on a person. Even though muscle weighs more than fat, and may possibly increase the BMI overall, a leaner body is a healthier body.

In conclusion, the BMI is a useful tool in measuring and maintaining a healthy weight. When trying to lower the BMI, improving the diet, along with help from a diet pill, is an excellent way to start. Exercise is essential for remaining healthy, as well.
